कोई अपेक्षा - कामनावश अथवा कोई भय से प्रेरित होकर हिंसा आदि करता है। कोई पाप से मुक्ति पाने की भावना से हिंसा करता है तथा कोई किसी आशंसा (अप्राप्त को प्राप्त करने की अभिलाषा) से हिंसा - प्रयोग करता है ।
THE TENDENCIES OF GREED FOR WEALTH
73. He (the greedy ) suffers day and night. Timely or untimely he always keeps on working. His desire for mundane pleasures turns into greed for wealth. He becomes a thief and a bandit. His mind remains disturbed and unstable and he habitually uses weapons (for violence and destruction).
74. He employs various means of oppression to accomplish various achievements like strength of the body, strength of the kin, strength of friendship, supernatural power, divine power, support of the state or the king, support of thieves, support of guests, support of the destitute and support of Shramans.

Some indulge in violence to fulfil desires and others out of fear. Some commit violence for salvation from sins and others due to some ambition (desire to attain the unattained).
विवेचन - सूत्र ७४ में हिंसा के विविध प्रयोजनों की चर्चा है। चूर्णि एवं टीका में विस्तार के साथ बताया है - मनुष्य अपनी जीवन-यात्रा के लिए विविध हेतुओं से हिंसा करता है। जैसे
(१) आत्म-बल- शरीर -बल- शरीर की शक्ति बढ़ाने के लिए मद्य, माँस आदि का सेवन करता है।
(२) ज्ञाति - बल - अपना पक्ष मजबूत करने के लिए स्वजन - सम्बन्धियों को धन आदि देकर शक्तिमान बनाता है।
(३) मित्र - बल - धन प्राप्ति तथा प्रतिष्ठा सम्मान आदि मानसिक तुष्टि के लिए मित्र-शक्ति को बढ़ाता है।
(४) व (५) प्रेत्य - बल तथा देव-बल- परलोक में सुख पाने के लिए तथा देवता आदि को प्रसन्न कर उनकी कृपा पाने के लिए यज्ञ, पशु-बलि, पिण्डदान आदि करता है।
(६) राज- बल - राजा का सम्मान एवं सहारा पाने के लिए कूटनीतिक चालें चलता है। शत्रु आदि को परास्त करने में सहायक बनता है।
(७) चोर - बल - चोर आदि के साथ साँठ-गाँठ करके, उन्हें सहयोग करके धन प्राप्ति तथा आतंक जमाना चाहता है।
