I SUPPORT THE INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO BAN LANDMINES. THE TERRIBLE TOLL THAT LANDMINES TAKE CLEARLY SHOWS THE IMMENSE DESTRUCTION AND SUFFERING THAT THESE AWFUL WEAPONS ARE CAPABLE OF CAUSING. WE, THEREFORE, SHOULD CONSIDER THE BANNING OF LANDMINES AS A STEP TOWARDS ULTIMATELY ACHIEVING GLOBAL DEMILITARISATION, FOR WHICH I AM DETERMINED TO DO WHATEVER I CAN.
AS A BUDDHIST MONK TO WHOM COMPASSION IS THE CORE PRACTICE, I ESPECIALLY ADMIRE THE NOBLE WORK OF THE INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO BAN LANDMINES. THE ETHICAL ASPECT OF COMPASSION IS TO REFRAIN FROM HARMING OTHERS - NOT JUST FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS BUT ALL LIVING BEINGS. THAT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE TRY TO INCULCATE THE VALUE OF COMPASSION IN OUR HEARTS WHILE MAKING EFFORTS TO BAN DESTRUCTIVE WEAPONS, SUCH AS LANDMINES. -H.H. Tenzin Gyatso, XIV Dalai Lama.
HOLY GROUND
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters
Genesis 1: 1-2
When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, 'Moses, Moses!' And he said, 'Here I am.' Then he said, 'Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.
Exodus 3:4-5
Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees; and they camped there by the water.
Exodus 15:27
He sustained him in a desert land, in a howling wilderness waste; he shielded him, cared for him, guarded him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirs up its nest, and hovers over its young; as it spreads its wings, takes them up, and bears them aloft on its pinions, the Lord alone guided him.
Deuteronomy 32: 10-12
...but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31
For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Isaiah 55:12
DISARMAMENT HAS TAKEN IMPORTANT STEPS FORWARD WITH THE SIGNING OF THE TREATY COMPLETELY BANNING NUCLEAR TESTING ... THIS MUST NOT HOWEVER MAKE US LESS VIGILANT WITH REGARD TO THE PRODUCTION OF INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED CONVENTIONAL AND CHEMICAL WEAPONS, OR INDIFFERENT TO THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES.
