Usabha, the first of their number. In the introduction it is of extreme interest to notice the statements of the author in reference to his own literary activity. It is as follows :

There is no doubt that we have here the beginning of a work, [58) and that chapter 1 (which is itself called pithikā, support, complement) did not yet precede these verses at the period of their origin.1011 From v. 5 and 8 we learn that the author does not intend to write an introduction merely for this second chapter, but that his work is designed for all the dvaśyaka matter and especially the sāmäiam.
