________________ Prakrit Verses in Sanskrit Works on Poetics 653 44.590. This gāthā is cited to illustrate the figure Dīpaka (when a common property consisting of a quality or an action, belonging to the relevant and the irrelevant i.e., to upameyas and upamānas is mentioned only once, it is called Dīpaka). In the gātha under consideration the minds of sajjanas (good men) are the upameya and taru-śikharas (the tops of trees) the upamāna. Their common property Samavanatatva and tungatva (the guņas) are each mentioned once only and hence the figure is Dipaka. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that the figure (śleşānuprānitā) Upamā contained in the gathā is overlooked by Visveśvara. 45.590 This skandhaka from Setu is cited to illustrate the figure Dīpaka. After citing the verse, Visveśvara remarks: अत्र राक्षसवधार्थं वानरानुत्तेजयत: सुग्रीववस्योती भुजा: प्रकृतत्वादुपमेया: । जलधरायदय उपमानभूता: ndani yordatirgu:1 (q. 789). The arms that have wielded the sword in the forefront of the battle are the upameya, the clouds that have released the rains... are the upamănas. The upamāya and the upamănas are both worthy of esteem (guru), even though they have become light (laghu). 46.590. This gāthā is cited to illustrate kriyā-dīpaka. After citing this gāthā, Visveśvara remarks : अत्र मानस्य प्रकृतत्वादुपमेयत्वम् । सर्वेषां छज्जइपदवाच्यायां शोभते इति क्रियायामन्वय : । (पृ. २९१). Here sulkiness (māna) of the woman who is dear to her lover is the upameya; gaiety of a master... are upamānas. All these - the upameya and the upamanas are connecteed with the action (kriyā) expressed by 8413 (1727). 47.590. This skandhaka from the Setu is cited to illustrate Kāraka-dipaka. Here one Kartı-Kāraka-a case-noun in the nominative viz. Rāma is connected with many actions represented by the verbs in the stanza 'nindai (reproaches), khijjai (saffers), juucchai (hates).... cf. Viśveśvara's remark अत्र निन्दतीत्यादिक्रियासु राम: कर्ता । 48.590. This gātha is already dealt with; vide ŚP S.No (1307.283) supra.
