Chapter XIV Prakrit Verses in Alamkāra-mahodadhi

Anandavardhana Narendraprabha too cites it as an example of Gunibhuta-vyangya. He thus comments upon it : अत्र वाच्याद् अङ्गसादाद् रसविशेषपरत्वेन सुन्दरात् स सङ्केतस्थानमागच्छदहं तु न गतेति व्यङ्ग्यमसुन्दरमित्यस्य गुणीभूतत्वम् । - पृ. १२.

Narendraprabha cites it to illustrate the vaicitryam (strikingness) of the verb jayati (triumphs). He thus comments : अत्र न नन्दतीत्याद्युक्तम्, किन्तु जयतीति इतरस्मान्नयनद्वयादुत्कर्षण वर्तते लोकोत्तरेण प्रकारेण स्थगितत्वादिति 'जि'-रूप-प्रकृतिजनितं वैचित्र्यम् । - पृ. १७.

Anandavadhana Narendraprabha cites it as an example of Arthāntarasankramitavacya. He thus comments : अत्र द्वितीयकमलशब्द: पौनरुक्त्येनानुपयुज्यमानत्वाद् बाधितस्वार्थः सन्नाधाराधेयभावरूपात् सम्बन्धाज्जगद्विलक्षणश्रीनिवासित्वरूपमतिशयमाविष्कर्तुं स्ववाच्यं विकासकमनीयत्वे संक्रमयति । पृ. ३७.

Narendraprabha cites it to illustrate the circumstance, called abhinaya (appropriate gesture), that restricts the abhidhā of an 31 href word. In the găthă under discussion the word 'etavat' is 37 af. Being of general signification it can express any sense that we can convey by a gesture. Here the word 'etāvat' is by gestures restricted to four different senses : "अभिनयोऽत्र स्तनप्रदर्शने हस्तस्य दाडिमफलाकार:, अक्षिप्रदर्शने तस्य कमलदलानुकृति:, अवस्थाप्रदर्शने तनुत्वसूचकम् उन्नमिततर्जनीकस्य हस्तस्य इतस्तत: संचालनम्, दिवसप्रदर्शने च उत्थापित चतुरङ्गलीको हस्तः। - A. follows Mammața and cites this stanza as an example where the expressed sense (वाच्यार्थ) is suggestive. He thus comments : अत्र विज्ञातस्वैरिणीत्वरूपाद् वक्तृवैशिष्ट्यात् काचित् स्वैरविहारार्थिनी तटस्थेन प्रतिभावता व्यज्यते । --- पृ. ४९.
