* 13. Ratnesvara, commenting upon the poetic excellence, called Kantih, cites this
gatha from Vakpati's Gaidavaho (Verse No. 85). He declares : अप्रहतपदैरारम्भ: सन्दर्भस्यैव कान्तिः। तद्यथा कुसुमस्य धनुरिति प्रहतम्। कौसुममित्यप्रहतम्। जलनिधाविति प्रहतम् । अधिजलधीत्यप्रहतम्। --- चमत्कारित्वं तु सहृदयालादकत्वमस्ति हि तुल्येऽपि वाचकत्वे पदानां कश्चिदवान्तरो विशेषो यमधिकृत्य किञ्चिदेव प्रयुञ्जते महाकवयो न तु सर्वम्। यथा - पल्लव इति वक्तव्ये किसलयमिति। स्त्रीति वक्तव्ये कान्तेति। कमलमिति वक्तव्ये राजीवमित्यादि। एतदेव महाकविभिरुपेयते। 'कत्तो णाम ण इट्ठं ---'।। (गउडवहो - ८५).
The printed text in the N. S. edn. (and Chaukhamba edn, too) is corrupt and obscure.
Vākpati, following Anandavardhana, asserts that earlier poets like Vyāsa, Vālmīki, Bāņa have simply touched the borders only in their works; the vast field of poetic themes, ideas, etc. still remains untouched.
*14. Vema Bhupala thus comments upon this gatha : काचिदसती गृहमागतं पथिकमाह - "पान्थ
नात्र संस्तरमस्ति---" उन्नतपयोधरान उन्नतमेघान उन्नतस्तनौ च । अत्र काचिदसचरिता विदग्धा हालिकवधूः सायंतनसमये गृहमागत्य शयनार्थं संस्तरं याचमानं कमप्यभिरूपपथिकं युवानं प्रति साभिलाषापि निरभिलाषेव गृहजनवञ्चनार्थं प्रस्तरस्थले ग्रामे मनागपि संस्तरं नास्तीति प्रतिकूलं ब्रुवाणा उन्नतपयोधरौ दृष्टवा यदि वससि तस्माद् (? तर्हि) वसेत्यनेनोन्नतस्तनमण्डलं दृष्ट्वा यद्यपभोगापेक्षास्ति तर्हि तिष्ठेति निवासाय तं प्रोत्साहयतीत्यभिप्रायः। अत्र शब्दशक्तिमलो वस्तुध्वनिः। अनेन तत्प्रोत्साहनस्य गम्यमानत्वात। स्तनमण्डलं दृष्ट्वा रिरंसुश्चेत्तिष्ठेति वस्तुन: प्रतीतेः। - पृ. ३१.
* 15. The printed text of this gātha from Gaüdavaho in the N.S. edn. (p. 81) as
well as Chaukhamba edn. (p. 123) is corrupt. The nāyikā was angry; but when her lover held her lower lip between his own lips, the flush of anger began wearing away like red wine in a crystal goblet subsiding when sipped (after
being seized between the two lips) by the man who drinks. : 16. This gāthā reads the first half as
पल्लविअं विअ करपल्लवेहिं पप्फुलिअं व मुणहअच्छेहिम्। - रत्नेश्वर, पृ. ८३. पल्लविअं विअ करपल्लवेहिं पप्फुल्लिअं विअ णअणेहिं। - भोज, पृ. ४५६.
