Tales from Indian Mythology
On an auspicious muhurtam fixed by Sukracharya himself, the marriage of Devayani to Yayati was celebrated with regal pomp and splendour. As Devayani was about to mount her bridal chariot, Sarmishta arrived with a small baggage contain: ing her personal effects, and knelt before Devayani. "Who is she?" asked Yayati. "What does she want?” Devayani did not reply; she only blushed. "Your Majesty,” explained Sarmishta, "I am the Empress's personal attendant. I am here to report myself for duty.” “I see,” observed Yayati. "Do you know where to find a servant's carriage?”
