Passions are the psychical states of self. These psychical states are of very great variety, but all of them may be included in attachment (râga), aversion (dvese) and infatuation (moha), which again can be subsumed under subha bhāva (auspicious psychical states) and a subha bhāva (inauspicious psychical states) leading to punya åsnavabandha and påpa ätrawa-bandha respectively. Moha (infatuation) which is the spiritual perversion and dresa(aversion) which manifests in anger (krodha), pride (måna), etc. are invariably a subha-bhava Besides näge (attachment) expressing itself in deceit (maya), greed (lobha) etc. and in sensual pleasures is a subhas but räga directed to spiritual and moral matters is fubha. In other words, devotion to Arhat, Siddha and saints, compassionate attitude towards those who are in distress and are thirsty and hungry, state of mind bereft of anger, pride, deceit and greed-all these lead to punya ašnava Besides, belittlement of others, sensual indulgence, causing pain to others, employment of knowledge in base objects—all these lead to påpa áframa (vide Samajasāra 282 and Pancastikaya 135.40). 48.
