SUTRAS
THE KEY TO THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE
99
12 - 'Transient' (adhruva) - the cognition of an object is not complete
and therefore subject to change, i.e. the form in which it appears does not last.
EXAMPLE: All perception arising in a consciousness still characterized by mixing error and true knowledge. It sometimes perceives more, sometimes less of reality and is called 'unsteady perception'.
SUTRA 17 Orfeu ll 96 11 Arthasya (17) Sense-perception (mati) perceives not only the outer (visible) characteristics of an element, but its entire content, purpose and meaning. (17)
When our senses come in contact with an object, we not only perceive what is visible, audible, tangible etc. but experience an instant and intimate connection to the entire basic element (dravya) of which the perceived object is just an aspect.
Elements (matter, space, time etc. - dravya) are inseparable from their features (color, form, size, function, duration etc. - bhava). Each time we perceive color, form etc., we always and automatically also become aware of the entire basic element(s) that triggered our experience.
This way we test whether what we perceive agrees with the possible variations that the perceived element(s) can assume. Everything that does not agree with the acceptable variations is rejected by our consciousness. Rejected events do not reach our attention.41
41 This describes how our sense-perception (inati) is shaped by the plane
of all potentially possible features of the elements (dravya) - see sutra 5.
