________________
English translation by George Baumann
The reader should note that in spite of the described defects much has been taken into account that he might not have expected. An attempt has been made to understand and acknowledge, on the one hand, the Avaśyaka tradition in connection with the rest of Jaina as well as non-Jaina literature. Therefore, some things have been treated extensively that normally do not fit into the framework of the task as seen by the title, but only because of its contents or because of its literary relationships.
