881 He carries impressions of his predecessors. We have here three vrttis, the ārabhati being omitted. Like NLRK., only one act is expected by SD. SD.'s definition is in a way closer to the NLRK. The SD. (VI. 285) adds,
"varņa-mātrā-chaganikāyutam, śộngāra bhāșitam, netā, strī cā'pyudātrā'tra,
sandhī ādyau tathā’ntimah.” Obviously 'chaganikā' can be emended as 'Vardhanikā' (N.D.), The hero and heroine both belong to the noble family as suggested in the BP. of Sā. Sandhis are three with garbha and vimarśa cancelled as suggested by BP. and NLRK. One act is retained as in NLRK.
Bhāņa, Bhāņaka, Bhāṇī, Bhāņikā -
All these four art-forms are discussed by various authorities as seen below, but quite often the difference is either thin, or in name only. Because of this closeness in both features and nomenclature, we take up all these four art-forms together for discussion.
'Bhāņa’ is mentioned by Abh., DR/A., Bhoja, H., ND.; Vāg. II. Bhāņaka - is mentioned by A.bh. alone. Bhāņi is read in DR./A., Śā., NLRK.; Bhānika is seen in Abh. Bho., H., ND., NLRK., Vāg II., and Viś. (= SD.).
Bhāņa - The Abh. (pp. 181, N.S. Vol. I. G.O.S., N.S. IV/268) quotes the definition of Bhāņa from the Cirantanas -, with the words - “tad uktam cirantanaiḥ.” It reads as -
"nșsimha-sūkarā”dīnām varṇanām jalpayed yataḥ nartakī, tena bhāṇaḥ syād
uddhatấnga-pradarśitaḥ." on pp. 181 (ibid) the A.bh. reads - bhaņakeșu nộsimhā"di-carita-varṇanam uddhatam eva.
This suggests that for both 'bhāņa' and 'bhāņaka', the Abh. has the same illustration and similar description. We may therefore conclude that
