________________ 852 SAHRDAYĀLOKA The Nātyadarpaņa of Rāmacandra and Guņacandra talks of other varieties of rūpaka at the end of the fourth chapter when it is stated : tad evam nātakā”dīni vīthyantāni dvādaśa rūpāņi sa-prapañcam laksitāni. anyāny api rūpakāņi drśyante The N.D. does not call these as Upa-rupakas, or geya etc. but simply states that there are other forms of drama also. But when the N.D. describes them in brief and separates them from the first twelve it follows that they are taken as minor varieties. They are enumerated as : (1) sattaka (2) śrīgadita (3) durmilitā (4) prasthāna (5) gosthi (6) hallīsaka (7) samyā (8) preksanaka (9) rāsaka (10) nātyarāsaka (11) kāvya (12) bhāna and (13) bhānikā. The N.D. enumerates nātikā and prakarani as major types. For Śāradātanaya (Ch. IX), the minor types are 'padárthábhinayā”tmaka' and are twenty such as (1) toțaka (2) nātikā (3) gosthi (4) sallāpa (5) śilpaka (6) dombī (7) prekşanam (8) nātya-rāsaka (9) rāsaka (10) ullāpyaka (11) hallisaka (12) durmallika (13) kalpavallī (14) mallikā (15) pārijātaka (16) lāsaka (17) śrigadita (18) bhāna-bhāni (19) prasthāna and (20) kävya. For NLRK of Sāgaranandin, the uparūpaka types are (1) gosthi (2) samllāpa prasthāna (5) kávya (6) hallīsaka (7) śrīgadita (8) bhānikā (9) bhāni (10) durmalikā (11) prekṣaṇaka (12) rāsaka (13) nātya-rāsaka and (14) ullāpyaka Naţikā and Trotaka are enumerated with the major types. Vägbhata II mentions nātikā and sattaka and the 'geya' varieties after Hemacandra, such as - (1) dombikā (2) bhāna (3) prasthāna (4) bhānikā (5) preraņa (6) singaka (7) rāmākrīda (8) hallīsaka (9) śrīgadita (10) rāsaka (11) gosthi (and the rest). Śingabhūpāla in his Rasárņava-sudhākara speaks only of nātikā and takes it only as a mixed variety of nataka and prakarana which does not deserve a separate recognition for him (Rs. III. 218-222). He does not talk of other upa-rūpakas. Vidyānātha does not mention anything beyond the ten major types (Pra. Ru. Nāțaka-prakarana, pp. 73-74, Edn. Madras, '14, ibid). Viśvanātha enumerates (SD. VI. 4-6) (1) nātikā (2) trotaka (3) gosthi (4) sattaka (5) nātya-rāsaka (6) prasthāna (7) ullāpyaka (8) kāvya (9) prenkhanam (10) rāsaka (11) samlāpaka (12) śrīgadita (13) silpaka (14) vilāsikā (15) durmallikā (16) prakarani (17) halliśa and (18) bhanikā. They are eighteen in all. We will now start with Bhoja's minor types. We will go on adding newer types only as seen in the authors that follow Bhoja, but will also take note if the concept of a given upa-rupaka differs in later anthors.
