Bhoja seems to be closer to Dhananjaya and Dhanika also. Preksya-prabandhas or dramatic performances are classified into those depicting a complete theme and a complete principal rasa with other rasas as subordinate, the major rūpakas of the type of vākyárthábhinaya, and other minor rūpakas of the padárthábhinaya type depicting only a bhāva and not a fully developed rasa. The nāțaka and other major types represent vākyárthábhinaya and minor types make for, padárthábhinaya. He says : (pp. 466, Sr. Pra. Ch. XI. Vol. II. Josyer)
"vākyárthábhinayo'yam prakīrtito nāțakā”di-bhedena, dvādaśa-vidha-padárthábhinayam
atha yathāsthitam vaksye." Bhoja does not mention totaka, (or trotaka) which is illustrated by some commentators by Kālidāsa's Vikramorvašīvam. We know that Abhinavagupta holds that totaka was defined by Kohala and others.
Abhinavagupta also says that Kohala and the rest also discussed satďaka, illustrated by the Karpūra-mañjarī of Rājasekhara. Bhoja mentions satpaka and is of the opinion that sattaka resembles nātikā in some respects as observed earlier. Bhoja's definition of Sattaka carries impressions of Rājasekhara's verse on sattaka (= sāțaka) in the Karpūramañjarī as noted above.
Bhoja differs from the DR. and Avaloka wherein only ten major rūpakas are taken as of the form of vāl hinaya. Bhoja adds two more, viz. nātikā and Sattaka to the ten major types and takes these twelve to be of the form of vākyárthábhinaya and he reserves twelve minor types for padárthábhinaya separately.
We also observed that Śāradātanaya draws upon a lot from Bhoja for ten major types of drama and his treatment of twenty uparūpakas goes beyond Bhoja though similarities can be traced to some extent in common varieties accepted by both. The N.D. also has twelve major types including nātikā and prakaranī and thirteen uparūpakas.
The Uparūpakas thus make an interesting study. We will first enumerate the varieties as recognised by Bhoja. Hemacandra. Rāmacandra and Gunacandra, Sāradātanaya, Sāgaranandin. “ingabhūpāla and Viśvanātha.
Prior to Bhoja, as noted above, it is the Abhinavabhārati which mentions some upa-rūpakas along with their characteristics. We have quoted passages from A.bh.
