SAHĶDAYĀLOKA "ukta-vyākhyāne tu kohalā”di-lakṣita-toțaka-satpaka-rāsakā”di-samgrahah.” (p. 441, Vol. II. A.bh. Mad. Ms.). A.bh. Vol. I. G.O.S. pp. 173, line 3 quoted by Dr. Raghavan also says : “kohalas tu bravīti..." etc. But p. 410, G.O.S. Edn. Vol. II. A.bh. also observes : tesām param kohalādibhir nāma-mātram pranītam." This means Kohala simply enumerated these varieties and did not discuss in full. We do not know also what is meant by 'ādi' in A.bh.'s expression “kohalādi'. Dr. Raghavan suggests that the earliest work now known which mentions some of the uparūpaka types is the Kāmasūtra of Vātsyāyana which mentions Hallisaka, and Natya-rāsaka. - II. 10. śl. 25, pp. 175, Chowk. Edn. :
"hallisaka-krīdanakaiḥ
gāyanair nātya-rāsakai).” The Kamasutra of Vātsyāyana (which is later than Bharata) also mentions Preksanaka. This may mean drama or dance in general or a special type of uparūpaka, as described by Bhoja later.
It is for the first time at A.bh. Vol. I. G.O.S. pp. 183. N.S. Ch.-IV. that we come across anustubh verses describing some uparūpakas with the words "tad uktam cirantanaih", but of course we have no knowledge as to who these ancients were. (Actually the verses are on pp. 183, in the second revised edition.) The verses read as :
cchannánurāga-garbhābhir uktibhir yatra bhūpateh āvarjyate manaḥ sā tu, masțnā dombikā matā : nțsimha-sūkarā"dīnām varnanā jalpayed yataḥ, nartaki tena bhāṇaḥ syād uddhatárga-pravartitaḥ; gajā”dīnām gatim tulyām krtvā pravasanam tathā, alpā”viddham su-masrņam tat-prasthānam vịttam ucyate, masļņam ca kvacid-dhūrta-caritam șidgakas tu saḥ. bālakrīdāniyuddhā"di tathā sūkara-simhajā dhvajādinā kştā krīļā yatra să bhāņikā matā. hāsya-prāyam preranam tu syāt prahelikayā’nvitam, rțuvarnana-samyuktam rāmākrīdam tu bhāsyate. maņdalena tu yannșttam hallīsakam iti smrtam, ekas tatra tu netā syād-gopaśrīņām yathā hari).” aneka-nartakīyojyam citra-tāla-layánvitam ā-catussaști-yugalās rāsakam masļņóddhatam."
