SAHRDAYĀLOKA Hemacandra and the rest, leaving aside the major ten types of rūpakas with all their characteristics and technicalities, structure-analysis, etc.
Bhoja enumerates in such a category, such art-forms as : nātikā, sattakah, śrīgaditam, durmallikä, prasthānam, kāvyam. bhānakam, bhānikā, gosthi, hallīsakam, nartanakam, preksanakam, nātyam, and rāsakam. We will take care of some other art-forms if seen in Hemacnadra and the rest. So, we begin with these fourteen first as imagined by Bhoja.
Natikā - For Bhoja Nātikā is a mixture of both prakarana and nātaka. He is satisfied with one such mixed variety while the Nātyadarpana has “prakarani" also, over and above nāţikā. Bhoja observes. (pp. 465, ibid) -
sarva-rasa-laksaņā”dhyā samanvitángair iyam trayodaśabhiḥ, prathamóttama-madhyamābhir yuktaḥ, syāt prakrtibhis tisębhiḥ. iti daśarūpakam etad bharatā"cāryánusārato gaditam, prakarana-nāțakabhedo
rūpakam iha nātikā bhavati.” Bhoja goes on to define näţika (pp. 466, Vol. II. Josyer, ibid) - as follows:
“strīprāyā caturankā lalitábhinayā”tmikāsu vihitángī, bahu-gita-nstya-vādyā rati-sambhogā”tmikā caiva, rājópacāra-yuktā, śộngārábhinaya-bhāva-samyuktā nāyaka-devi-parijana-samanvitā nāțaka-prakrtiḥ, prakarana-samudbhavā punar utpădyam vastu, nāyakam nộpatim.
antahpura-sangītaka-kanyām adhikrtya kartavyā.” The N.S. XVIII. 110, D.R. III, M.M. (= Mandāra-maranda pp. 73, B.P. (= Bhāvaprakāśana) p. 247, N.D. (= Nātyadarpana) p. 120, S.D. (= Sāhitya-darpana) 269272; R.S. (= Rasārnava Sudhākara) III; N.L.R.K. (= Nātaka-laksana-ratna-kośa) 2745, and of course Hemacandra (Kā. Sā. VIII. 49, pp. 354, Edn. Nandi) - define Nātikā.
