बाहर से आश्रम के मालिक ने महावीर स्वामी को बुलाया। महावीर स्वामी ने बाहर आकर कारण पूछा। आश्रम के मालिक ने बताया कि गायें आकर इधर चर रही है तो अपने देखा नहीं । आपको सावधानी से यहाँ रहना आवश्यक है। महावीर स्वामी के मन में यह बात आयी कि मेरे कारण दूसरों को नुकसान पहुंच रहा है। यह सोचकर उन्होंने तुरन्तु उस प्रदेश को छोड़ा, और निकट के जंगल की ओर चल पड़े। बाद में मन में प्रतिज्ञा कल ली कि भविष्य में मैं जहाँ रहूँगा वहाँ के लोगों पर भार नहीं बनूँगा । जितना समय हो उतने समय में अपने ध्यान में निमग्न हो जाऊँगा । ध्यान में ही पूरा समय बिताऊँगा । मेरे दो हाथ ही भिक्षापात्र हैं। गृहस्ताश्रम और अन्य लोगों को छोडकर मैं दूर रहूँगा।
oblivious of the necessity of protecting the hermitage. Now Bhagawan Mahavira thought that the feelings of others were hurt on account of himself and at once decided to leave the place. Then he proceeded to a nearby forest. Now he vowed that he would not go to any place where he would be a burden upon others. He further vowed that all his time would be spent in meditation and if, there were to be any moments of consciousness, they would be spent in silence. He said to himself that his own palms would serve as a cup for alms and that he would be away from Janapadas (places where people live).
