31. सम्राट पोत्तिल
अपर विदेह देश के मूक नामक राज्य का पालक धनंजय था । उसकी पत्नी धारणी देवी के गर्भ से पोत्तिल नामक पुरुष-सन्तान के रूप में महावीर की जीवात्मा का जन्म लेने का अवसर मिला ।
राज-दम्पतियों ने वानप्रस्थ स्वीकार किया। तब युवराज पोत्तिल चौदह राजकीय रत्नों और नौ राज-विधानों में परिणत होकर सम्राट बनकर प्रसिद्ध हुआ। उसके राज्य में सर्वत्र सर्वदा शान्ति और चैन रही। भाग्यवश उसके राज्य में धर्मघोष नामक जैनाचार्य का आना हुआ। सम्राट पोत्ति ने उनके चरणों की वन्दना की और उनके धर्मोपदेश सुने । मानवजन्म की आवश्यकता के गुण और सम्पदाओं के अल्पत्व को उनके उपदेशों के द्वारा समझ लिया। पोत्तिल ने तुरन्त सन्यासी बनकर मरण के अन्त तक योगी के रूप में जीवन बिताया । अन्त में महा शुक्र कल्प नामक स्वर्ग में कुछ समय व्यतीत करके पीछे वर्द्धमान का जन्म लेने के लिये श्री महावीर की जीवात्मा उहात रही।
31 EMPEROR POTTILA
Mahavira next took birth as the son of Emperor Dhananjaya and his queen Dharani Devi the rulers of Mooka in the realm of Aparavideha. When the emperor and his consort retired to the woods after relinquishing their kingly and queenly duties (and entering that stage of life called Vanaprastha) Prince Pottila became adept in the 14 Rajarathnas and 9 Rajanidhanas and won fame as a King of Kings. Happiness and prosperity reigned supreme in his empire. By a stroke of good luck a Jaina Acharya by name Dharmaghosha happened to visit the kingdom of Mooka. King Pottila prostrated at the monk's feet and heard his preaching with rapt attention. As a result of that preaching, the transitoriness of human life and the trumpery nature of human wealth were borne in upon the mind of Pottila. No sooner was he thus transformed, than he renounced everything including his kingdom and led the life of a monk until his death. After that the soul of Mahavira ascended to the heaven called Mahasukrakalpa where it dwelt for some time and then travelled back to the earth to take rebirth as Vardhamana.
