44. कुत्तों से कष्ट
लाट प्रान्त में सिंहभूमि हिंसा प्रवृत्ति के लिए लुटेरों का अड्डा (निलय) है। पहाडों से भरी हुए वह जगह अपने ध्यान के लिये अनुकूल समझकर श्री महावीर स्वामी ध्यान-योग्य प्रदेश की खोज में चले जा रहे थे। वे सिंहभूमि के राज मार्ग पर जा रहे थे। नंगे पाँव और हाथ में हथियार लिये बिना चलते हुए श्री महावीर स्वामी वहाँ (सिंहभूमि) के लोगों को विचित्र (विलक्षण) से जान पड़े। वहाँ के लोगों ने अपने पालतू कुत्तों और सड़क पर रहने वाले कुत्तों को स्वामी की ओर उकसा कर भेजा था। जब वे कुत्ते स्वामी को काट रहे थे तब वहाँ के लोग पैशाचिक प्रवृत्ति से आनन्द विभोर होकर देखते रहे । बाकी साधु लोग कुछ कुछ हथियार हाथ में लिये हुए बचाते रहे। लेकिन स्वामीजी का दृढ संकल्प ही उनका हाथियार था। उसी हाथियार के सिवा और किसीप्रकार का हथियार उनके पास नहीं था। स्वामी जी ने समझा कि मैं जितने कष्ट भोग रहा हूँ वे सब कष्ट मेरे प्रात्कन (पूर्व) जन्म के पाप कर्मों के फल हैं। ये पाप गंगा के पवित्रजल से घुल कर मिट रहे हैं। कुत्तों के बहुत काटने पर स्वामी विचलित नहीं हुए। वे घायल होकर भी खून से लथपथ हुए शरीर को लेकर ऐसे समय में भी मेरूपर्वत की सी अचंचल दीक्षा से पुष्पक विमान की तरह अपनी लक्ष्य की ओर जा रहे थे। उस प्रान्त के कुछ बुद्धिमान लोगों ने इस विरपीत (वैपरीत्य) को देखकर लजित हो दूर से ही स्वामी को प्रणाम करके अपनी भूलों को क्षमा करने के लिए विनती की थी।
44 OVERCOMING CANINE FURY:
Samhabhoomi in the Kingdom of Laat, was infested with wicked people given to cruel tendencies. The whole area was mountainous, however, and Bhagawan Mahavira thought that that place would be ideal for his Dhyana. So, the Bhagawan was searching for a suitable spot in this area where he could sit in meditation. With this object in mind the Bhagawan was walking along the thoroughfares of Samhabhoomi. This naked Swami without a trident and without wearing the usual wooden sandals of the mendicants struck the local people to be odd so they set their domestic dogs upon the Swami. As the dogs were biting the Swami men and women of the place were dancing and clapping their hands with malicious and fiendish glee. It is customary for travelling mendicants to ward off biting animals by shaking and pointing their tridents at them. But this Swami seemed to be completely different from them and his iron will seemed to be the only instrument of defence. Once again the Bhagawan felt that these happenings were the result of deeds in the past life and bore them with supreme patience. He never tried to fight off the dogs and, with his body filled with dog bites and dripping blood all over, proceeded towards his goal. He resembled Mount Meru in the inflexibility of his purpose and the divine plane Pushpaka in his sense of direction. Having seen all this, some of the more discriminating residents of Samhabhoomi were ashamed of themselves and the actions of their fellow villagers and saluted the Swami from a distance as he was moving away from them. In their minds, they requested the Swami to grant them forgiveness for their cruel indiscretions.
