8 : PART II
GUIDELINES TO MAHAVIR-DARSHAN
Their names are :
(1) JNANAVARANIYA or knowledge obscuring Karma. (2) DARSHANAVARANIYA or faith-obscuring or perception
obscuring Karma. (3) ANTARAYA, that which hinders or obstructs the progress
or success of the soul. (4) MOHANIYA, that which infatuates or deludes the soul or
makes it lose equilibrium of thought and feeling.
These ghatiya or destructlive KARMAS retain the soul in mundane existence, the character of which is conditioned by another quartet of KARMAS, the latter not destructive, but determining merely the body and the environments in which the mundane soul must exist.
They are called AGHATIYA, or non-destructive Karmas. Their names are : (1) Ayus : the Karma which determines the duration of our
lives or other conditions. (2) Nama : that which determines the character of the indivi
duality i.e. our body, height, size, colour etc. (3) Gotra : that which determines our family, nationality etc. (4) Vedaniya : that which gives pleasure or pain in mundane life.
The next Lesson will deal with the seven principles.
