________________ XI. HISTORICAL EVALUATION The poem was written to serve two purposes. First, it relates the history of the Caulukyas from Mūlarāja to Kumārapāla and secondly it illustrates the grammar written by Hemacandra himself. As Hemacandra bad a motive of writing a Mahākāvya and to illustrate grammar so naturally poetical elements crept in which were the cause of the change in some facts. Some new and exaggerated information had also to be introduced to illustrate grammar. We can divide the historicity of the Dvyāśrakāvya as follows: 1. New information not known from the contemporary sources. 2. Accurate information supported by other historical evide nces. 3. Omissions by the Dvyāśrayakāvya. 4. Exaggerations and transformation of facts. 5. New facts only for grammatical illustrations. Besides, Hemacandra omits the dates of the kings totally. He moulded his characters according to the ehical exaltations. Genealogical lists of kings given by Hemacandra is completely authentic and is supported by paṭṭāvalīs1 and inscriptional evidences. I. New information not given by contemporary sources. 1. Bhandarkar, R. G.: Report on the search for Skt. Mss., 1883-84, p. 150. Appendix III. A Paṭṭāvali of the kings of pattana.
