of any outside authority to moniter and shape our destiny. Buddhism like Jainism also believes in the theory of "Karma" which works out its results automatically. Therefore this Arya Satya exhorts us to increase our ethical earnestness and personal efforts. Buddhism also believes that total annihilation of all Karmas is necessary for attaining Nirvan.
What is the root cause of human sufferings? Buddha's reply is, "Desires" which are born out of "Ignorance". Buddhist scholars have developed the idea by pointing out to the chain of emotions finally leading to sufferings. It is not necessary to go into these details at this stage. But to state shortly, the root cause is "Avidya".
The third Arya Satya says that it is possible to overcome our sufferings. The Buddhists have prescribed a process by which non-attachement called "Nirveda" develops into detachment cailed "viraga" and how this finally results in "Nirodha" which is the thied Arya Satya. This process is much like the Jain concept of "Samvara and Nirjara"
