violated is regarded as sufficient to entitle the confessing soul to be re-admitted into
the Order. It should be borne in mind that half the
purity is effected by the merest desire to atone for one's faults, and the rest is easily accomplished by means of the cheerful carrying out of the purificatory penance, so that the asrava (inflow) of evil karma is brought to a stop as soon as the mind repents and perceives the necessity for the removal of the stain from the heart, and the destruction of the tendency for the evil desire which had occasioned the special inflow speedily accomplishes the nirjarā (destruction or
removal) of the taint itself. (2) Vinayā (reverence) which is of four kinds,
namely, (i) darśana vinaya, i.e., the establishing of
the mind in Right Faith and 'showing respect to those who are endowed with
such Faith ; (ii) jnana vinaya, that is, 'observing due res
pect for those who are possessed of true wisdom, and the acquisition of jnana
(knowledge divine); (iii) charitra vinaya, which is the observance
of the rules of proper conduct, and rever. ence for those who observe such rules; and
