personal safety in his mind. He knows that the soul is immortal, so that the body alone can be destroyed if attacked by a beast. But he is not anxious to preserve the body; rather, on the contrary, he is himself anxious to destroy it completely. So he has no fear from any one, whether man or beast, and maintains his mental serenity under all circum stances.
(10) Posture parisaha, consequent on the rules as regards sitting or lodging. The sadhu sojourns in caves, hollow places in tree-trunks, unoccupied houses, forests and the like, and will not fly from them on any account, whatever the nature of the threatening calamity.
(11) Couch parisaha, arising from the observ. ance of the rules as to sleeping. The saint should lie down on mother earth, that is, hard ground, He is not allowed the use of a pillow. While lying down he should not turn from side to side, but should lie either. flat on his back or on any of the two sides, stretched out like a log of wood, and should remain in the same position throughout. He should not allow himself to be troubled with thoughts of discomfort, nor suffer his mind to recall or dwell upon the luxuries of the home he has left behind.
(12) Abuse parisaha-The saint should be totally indifferent to abuse, however vile and howso ever malicious.
(13) Ill-treatment parisaha.-The saint should on no account resist evil, and should never regard
