________________ GENERAL SURVEY (3) right speech, (4) right conduct, (5) right livelihood, (6) right effort, (7) right mindfulness, and, (8) right rapture, that is mental tranquillity, This eight-fold path is intended to stop the wheel of Lise, which revolves because of twelve kinds of nidanas each of which is caused by the one preceding it, accord. ing to the following enumeration: (1) ignorance, (2) mental predisposition or karma, (3) consciousness, (4) individuality (vame and form), (5) sensibility, (6) contact (sensory stimulus), (7) sensations, (8) craving, (9) attachment (clinging to life), (10) becoming (existence), (11) birth, and (12) old age, death, grief, lamentation, suffering, depression and despair... How consciousness gives rise to individuality? is to be worked out in this way : it is the union of aggregates which makes the individual; consciousness arises from aggregates; "every person or thing or god is therefore a putting together, a compound" (Early Buddhism, page.
