enquiring into the nature and practicability of the science, and with making brief, but general, observations on the subject, which are to be understood as giving merely the most rudimentary and elementary principles. of the practical side of Yoga.
It is said that Yoga is the science which raises the capacity of the human mind to respond to higher vibrations, and to perceive, catch and assimilate the infinite conscious movements going on around us in the Universe ; and it is claimed that all the miracles performed by the numerous company of saints, saviours, and sages, in all times and countries, were due to the knowledge of this--the grandest of all sciences.
It has been shown in the preceding pages that the cause of unhappiness, bondage and misery of the soul is purely and simply ignorance. It was on account of ignorance that Adam, instead of 'walking in the company of the Lord God in the Garden of Eden', was turned out of it, and it is due to ignorance that'heaven' has hitherto remained lost to us. It has been also seen that almost all the redeemers and saviours of the race, who have appeared in various ages and countries, have pointed out the primary means of redemption to consist in the knowledge of the Self. But this is true only in a general way, since it is one thing to know the truth and another to realize it; for the very first requisite for realization is a firm, unshakable belief in the Truth. One must possess what Jesus would have called an unassailable, undying Faith ; and the only test of faith is that one should not hesitate to risk one's life on it.
