________________ Ch. 8: Ahimsa and Social Justice animals in yagnya, so I thought ahimsa means only 'to stop killing animals'. The true meaning of ahimsa became clear to me only when a shravak (layperson) asked Mahavir about it at a samosaran in Pava. Mahavir's Samosaran (sermon) on Ahimsa That samosaran in Pava became a dialogue between Mahavir and a shravak. The shravak asked, “Bhagwan, you ask for total ahimsa, but is that ever possible? Do we not kill and destroy many lives when we eat food, drink water, or breathe air? While walking we kill many insects under our feet. How can we live without such violent activities? How can we live a totally non-violent life?" 91 For Private & Personal Use Only Jain Education International www.jainelibrary.org
