SUTRA 1 (Dharma)
15 (The medium, which helps the motion of things already in motion, is called dharma. Just as fish takes the help of water in its movement so do soul and matter take the help of dharma when they begin to move by themselves.)
धर्मः स तात्विकैरुक्तो यो भवेद् गतिकारणम् ।।
जीवादीनां पदार्थानां मत्स्यानामुदकं यथा ।।43 (The fulcrum of motion for substances like soul, etc., is called dharma by the adepts.)
जलवन्मत्स्ययानस्य तत्र यो गतिकारणम् । जीवादीनां पदार्थानां स धर्मः परिवर्णितः।। लोकाकाशमभिव्याप्य संस्थितो मूर्तिवर्जितः।
नित्यावस्थितिसंयुक्तः सर्वज्ञज्ञानगोचरः ।। 44 (That which is the cause of motion of substances like souls is dharma. It helps motion just as water helps the motion of a fish. It pervades the whole universe (lokākāśa), is without form and eternal and its true nature is known only to the omniscient".
In Pañcāstikāya of Sri Kundakunda we have the following detailed description of dharmāstikāya:
धम्मत्थिकायमरसं अवण्णगंध असद्दमप्फासं । लोगागाढं पटुं पिहुलमसंखादियपदेसं ।। अगुरुलघुगेहि सया तेहि अणंतेहि परिणदं णिच्चं। गदिकिरियाजुत्ताणं कारणभूदं सयमकज्ज।। उदयं जह मच्छाणं गमणाणुग्गहयरं हवदि लोए। तह जीवपुग्गलाणं धम्मं दव्वं वियाणेहि ।। जादो अलोगलोगो जेसि सब्भावदो य गमणठिदी। दो वि य मया विभत्ता अविभत्ता लोयमेत्ता य ।। ण य गच्छदि धम्मत्थी गमणं ण करेदि अण्णदवियस्स। हवदि गती स प्पसरो जीवाणं पुग्गलाणं च ।। विज्जदि जेसिं गमणं ठाणं पुण तेसिमेव संभवदि । ते सगपरणामेहिं दु गमणं ठाणं च कुवंति ।। 45
