Or alternatively it has also been regarded as a secondary derivative, without any change in meaning, from márta- (WackernagelDebrunner, II/2, $ 651a, small type, p. 807 and $ 652c, p. 813). It has, however, to be admitted that *ghnya- like mártya- is not used by itself.
