In the light of the above discussion we may formulate an assumption that an irregular but compulsory alternation, as instanced above, leads us to suspect a merger of two different phonemes of the proto-stage. The difference in the paradigm in the attes!ed stage is thus sought to be explained on the basis of there being two different phonemes at an earlier stage.
