clothes. These are not befitting of our station in life. You must uphold the dignity and status of the family.
Amar told his brother: Sir, the dignity of a family is not vested in its clothes. It is derived from the character of its people.
Hearing this his brother was furious. He upbraided Amar in an angry voice: Don't lecture me!! Living in the company of saints, you have also started giving lectures. Enough of such lectures and saints... now come home with us!
Amar said: I do not want to go home. My place is at my Guru's feet. ...please help me get permission for my initiation.
His brother replied: No, not at all. You will never get permission from us. Remove all thoughts of becoming a monk from your mind.
Amar then went to his mother. He said: Dear mother, I have been living with my Gurudev for a few years now. When we move from place to place people question him about me. Even the police sometimes ask him who is this young boy? Has he run away from home? Please give me a permission letter that proves that I have your consent.
By a strange twist of fate, (and his Guru's blessings), his mother agreed to write the letter, and in fact wrote it with her own hands! Now Amar had to get it signed by his father. Strangely he too did not create a fuss. He was immersed in some work and signed it without even reading it.
Amar returned triumphantly to Banga. Gurudev was in his meditation. When he came out of his meditation, he saw Amar standing in front of him. He asked: Amar what happened?
Without speaking Amar placed the letter at his feet.
Gurudev read the letter and was very impressed with Amar's achievement. He said: Amar you have accomplished something that older, more experienced people were not able to do.
