ઉત્તર હિંદુસ્તાનમાં જૈનધર્મ
પુત્ર ઉપરાંત એને બીજા પણ પુત્રો હતા, જે બધાનાં નામો મળતાં આવતાં હોય કે નહિ પણ બન્નેના ગ્રંથે માં જોવામાં આવે છે. શ્રેણિકના આ બધા પુત્ર અને રાણીઓ વિષે જૈન ગ્રંથેનો એવો દાવો છે કે તેમાંના ઘણા ખરા મહાવીરના સંઘમાં ભળ્યા હતા અને નિર્વાણ પામ્યા હતા. જૈનોને આ દાવો છેડી ઘણી અતિશક્તિ સિવાય અસંભવિત તે નથી જ મહાવીરે દુઃખી જનસમાજ સમક્ષ જે મહાન સંદેશ મૂકે તેમાં તેમના સંબંધીઓએ
જ્વલંત ભાગ લીધો હોય તે સ્વાભાવિક છે. મહાવીર અને તેમના રાજવંશી અનુયાયીઓની વાત બાજુ પર મૂકીએ તો પણ શ્રેણિક સંબંધી જેનોની સાહિત્યિક અને લૌકિક દંતકથાઓ એટલી વ્યવસ્થિત અને વિવિધ છે કે પોતાના મહાન આશ્રયદાતા રાજવી પ્રતિ જેને જે માન ધરાવતા તેની તે સાક્ષી પૂરે છે અને સુભાગે તેની એતિહાસિકતા શંકાથી પર છે.
હવે જેનોના કૃણિકનો વિચાર કરતાં જણાય છે કે તેના સંબંધી કથાઓ તેના પિતા શ્રેણિક જેટલી હૃદયંગમ નથી, જોકે તેના જીવનના લગભગ બધાય પ્રસંગો પર પ્રકાશ ફેંકતું ઘણું સાહિત્ય સભ્ય છે. આમ છતાં જૈન અને બૌદ્ધો પ્રતિ આ મહાન રાજાની વૃત્તિ સ્પષ્ટ કરતી તેની કારકિર્દીમાંથી એક વસ્તુ મળે તેવી છે.
કૃણિકના જીવનને આ પ્રસંગ મગધની રાજગાદી સાથે સંકળાયેલું છે, બૌદ્ધો નિશ્ચિતપણે કહે છે કે “તેનો પુત્ર અજાતશત્રુ બિંબિસારને ખંજરથી મારવાની અણી પર હતો ત્યારે અધિકારીઓએ તેને પકડી લીધું હતું, પરંતુ બિંબિસારે પિતાની

5. About the whole of Aupapātika, the first Upārga of the Jainas, deals with Ajātasatru. Besides this we get references about him in the Bhagavalī, the Uvāsaga-Dasão, the AntagadaDasão, and many other places. Künika has been fully dealt with by the Jainas.
