Jambūdvipa Author and Date
This canon has been categorised as Upanga which shows that it was composed at a later period after Lord Mahavira's nirvana. Its author must be some anonymous elderly monk. The date of composition too is unknown. Jivājīvābhigame, containing detailed accounts of the Kalpavrkşas, was also composed by the elders. Jambúdvipaprojñupti gives only a brief account of them indicating the details through jāva'. This shows that Jambūdvīpaprajñapti was composed at a later period than that of Jivājīvābhigume. Possibly we may ascribe it to an earlier date than the emergence of a clear-cut distinction between Svetāmbara and Digambara schools which are mostly unanimous about the contents of Jambūdvīpaprajnapti. On this basis we can guess it to belong to the 4th-5th century of Vīranirvana.
Commentaries
About nine commentaries are available on this canon. Out of them, the V i by Sānticandra alone, has been printed; the remaining ones are unpublished. Sānticandra has mentioned that Malayagiri's commentary was lost with the passage of time, but noderii scholars have traced it out in the Jaisalmer Bhandāra. The Vrttis by Sánticandra and Punyasagara bear the mention of Cūrni. These Commentaries are as follows:--- SN. Canon
