आदि की सहायता से सुसमाहित-आत्मा बनना चाहिए । ज्ञान आदि से अलंकृत आत्मा ही सुसमाहित आत्मा कहला सकता है ।
सूत्र शब्द का अर्थ 'सूत्र' शब्द का अर्थ करते हुए नियुक्तिकार लिखते हैं
"सुत्तं तु सुत्तमेव उ अहवा सुत्तं तु तं भवे लेसो अत्थस्स सूयणा वा”। सूत्र शब्द के अर्थ-ज्ञान के लिए इस शब्द (सूत्र) का अर्थ जानना बहुत आवश्यक है । साथ ही यह जानना भी परम आवश्यक है कि 'सुत्त' शब्द के प्राकृत में 'सुप्त' और 'सूत्र' दो अर्थ होते हैं । अतः इस वाक्य का अर्थ यह हुआ कि जिस प्रकार सोये हुए पुरुष के पास वार्तालाप करते हुए भी उसको उसका कुछ बोध नहीं होता, इसी प्रकार बिना व्याख्या अथवा वृत्ति या भाष्य के जिसके अर्थ का बोध यथार्थ रूप से नहीं होता, उसका नाम सूत्र है । अर्थात् सूत्र में संक्षेप से ही बहुत सा अर्थ वर्णन किया जाता है । तत्त्वज्ञ विद्वान् भाष्य आदि कर उसका अर्थ सर्व-साधारण के लिए भाष्य या व्याख्या-रूप में करते हैं | अथवा जिस प्रकार एक सूत्र अर्थात् तागे में कई प्रकार के पदार्थ एकत्रित किये जाते हैं, इसी प्रकार सूत्र में नाना प्रकार के अर्थों का संग्रह किया होता है । अथवा सूक्त अर्थात् जनहितैषिणी दृष्टि से ज्ञान-पूर्वक जो कथन किया जाता है, वही सूक्त होता हुआ सूत्र कहलाता है । प्राकृत भाषा में सूक्त के लिए भी 'सुत्त' शब्द का ही प्रयोग होता है । निरुक्तिकार इस शब्द की व्याख्या करते हुए कहते हैं:
"नेरुत्तिया इतस्सं सूयइ सिव्वइ तहेव सुवइत्ति ।
अणुसरंति तिय भेया तस्स नामा इमा हुति ।।" इस पद्य का अर्थ यह है कि सूचना करता है, वही सूत्र है । क्योंकि जिस प्रकार सूत्र-संयुक्त सुई खो जाने पर भी सूत्र (तागे) की सहायता से मिल जाती है, इसी प्रकार अनेक प्रकार के घटनाचक्र में आकर विस्मृत अर्थ का भी सूत्र सूचक होता है । अथवा जिस प्रकार सुई भिन्न वस्त्रों के टुकड़ों को सी कर कञ्चुक आदि अत्युत्सम और उपयोगी वस्त्र बना देती है, इसी प्रकार जो इधर-उधर बिखरे हुए अर्थों को एक रूप में संगृहीत कर देता है, उसी का नाम सूत्र है । अथवा जिस प्रकार चन्द्रकान्तमणि से चन्द्रमा की किरणों के संयोग से जल और सर्य-कान्तमणि से सर्य की किरणों के स्पर्श होने पर अग्नि स्रुत होती है अर्थात् बहने लगती है, इसी प्रकार जिससे अर्थ की धारा
