२०. [ प्र. ] भगवन् ! ऐसा छद्मस्थ मनुष्य, जो किसी देवलोक में देव रूप में उत्पन्न होने वाला है, भगवन् ! वास्तव में, क्षीणभोगी (दुर्बल शरीर वाला) उत्थान, कर्म, बल, वीर्य और पुरुषाकार - पराक्रम के द्वारा विपुल और भोगने योग्य भोगों को भोगता हुआ विहरण (जीवनयापन ) करने में समर्थ नहीं है ? 5 भगवन् ! क्या आप इस अर्थ (तथ्य) को इसी तरह कहते हैं ?
[उ. ] गौतम ! यह अर्थ समर्थ नहीं है, क्योंकि वह ( देवलोक में उत्पत्तियोग्य क्षीण - शरीरी भी) उत्थान, कर्म, बल, वीर्य और पुरुषाकार - पराक्रम द्वारा किन्हीं विपुल एवं भोग्य भोगों को ( यत्किंचित् रूप में, मन से भी) भोगने में समर्थ है। इसलिए वह भोगी है। वह भोगों का ( मन से ) परित्याग करता हुआ ही महानिर्जरा और महापर्यवसान वाला होता है।

20. [Q.] Bhante ! A chhadmasth (one who is short of omniscience due to residual karmic bondage), destined to be born as a divine being in some divine realm and with an emaciated body (hsheen-bhogi) is, in fact, not capable of leading a life enjoying ample pleasant experiences due to his feeble effort to rise (utthaan) and act (karma); dwindling physical strength (bal); reduced mental capacity (virya ); wavering intent to act (purushakar); and insignificant valour (parakram). Bhante ! Do you affirm this statement?
२१. [ प्र. ] आहोहिए णं भंते! मणुस्से जे भविए अन्नयरेसु देवलोएसु० ।
[ उ. ] एवं चेव जहा छउमत्थे जाव महापज्जवसाणे भवति ।
[Ans.] Gautam ! That is not correct because that person (a chhadmasth destined to be born as a divine being and with an emaciated 卐 body) is, in fact, capable of enjoying ample pleasant experiences with his 5 effort to rise and act; physical strength; mental capacity; intent to act; 5 and valour. That is why he is a bhogi. He is able to attain extensive shedding of karmas (maha nirjara) and a noble end (mahaparyavasan) only by voluntary renouncing of pleasant experiences.
२१. [ प्र. ] भगवन् ! ऐसा अधोऽवधिक (नियत क्षेत्र का अवधिज्ञानी) मनुष्य, जो किसी देवलोक में उत्पन्न होने योग्य है, क्या वह क्षीणभोगी उत्थान यावत् पुरुषकार - पराक्रम द्वारा विपुल एवं भोग्य भोगों को भोगने में समर्थ है ?

21. [Q.] Bhante ! An adho-avadhik (a person with limited avadhi 5 jnana), destined to be born as a divine being in some divine realm and with an emaciated body... and so on up to ... wavering intent to act; and insignificant valour. Bhante ! Do you affirm this statement ?
[Ans.] ( Gautam !) What has been said about a chhadmasth should be f repeated here.
