FOREWORD
The first voluine of the Pàda-Index of Vālmiki's Rāmāyaṇa was published in 1961 as Gaekwad's Oriental Series, No. 129.
Unfortunately Professor G. H. Bhatt, the editor of this Pāda-Index, passed away on April 4, 1965, before the second volume of the Index could be printed and published.
As mentioned in the first volume of the Index, it is based on the edition of the Rāmāyaṇa published by the Gujarati Printing Press, Bombay (1912-20 A.D.) which is the vulgate text used for collation in our Critical Edition of the Rāmāyana, of which the late Professor G. H. Bhatt was the first General Editor.
I hope this Pada-Index will be useful to all students of Sanskrit Literature.
We are thankful to the University Grants Commission and the Government of the Gujarat State for the liberal financial assistance given towards the publication of the Critical Edition of the Rāmāyaṇa and works like this in the Gaekwad's Oriental Series.
The late Professor G. H. Bhatt's preface to the first volume of the PādaIndex has been also reproduced in this volume.
