DEGENERATION
Therefore: After Tao is lost, there arises the doctrine of humanity, After humanity is lost, then arises the doctrine of justice. After justice is lost, then arises the doctrine of Li. Now Li is the thinning out of loyalty and honesty of heart, And the beginning of chaos. The prophets are the flowering of Tao, and the origin of folly. Therefore the noble man dwells in the heavy (base), And not in the thinning (end). He dwells in the fruit, And not in the flowering (expression). Therefore he rejects the one and accepts the other.

अधःपतन
इसलिए: जब ताओ का लोप होता है, तब मनुष्यता का सिद्धांत जन्म लेता है, आँन जब मनुष्यता का लोप ठोता है, तब न्याय का सिद्धांत जन्म लेता है। ऑर जब न्याय का भी लोप होता है, तब कर्मकांड का सिद्धांत पैदा होता है। अब यह कर्मकांड हृदय की निष्ठा और ईमानदारी का विरल हो जाना है। आँर वही अराजकता की शुरुआत भी हैं। पैगंबन ताओ के पूरे निवले पुल है।
आँन उनसे ही मुनर्वता की शुरुआत भी होती हैं। इसलिए आर्य पुरुष सघनता (नीव) में बसते हैं, विरलता (अंत) में वे नहीं बसते। वे फल में बसते हैं, फूल की निवलावट (अभिव्यक्ति) में वे नहीं बसते। इसलिए वे एक को इनकान और दूसरे को स्वीकार करते हैं।
