There are various systems of philosophy, but the fundamental principle of all these is one and that is character; and this is the necessary consequence of knowledge. It is improper to have a perverse attitude towards other sects.

39 Even the refutation of unreasonable arguments should be carried on without par. tiality and hatred. The high-minded are everywhere equanimous, then what to say of their being equable towards other sects.
40 A person who is subdued by passions, even though adhering to his religion, degrades his life; while a person who has subdued his passions, in spite of his not following any special sect, secures the high blessing of his soul.
