So that “desirable” or “undesirable” applies according to as the object in view is helped or not helped
There are four classes of things upon which the mind can be steadily active, and of them two are desirable and two undesirable for the development of character.
Undesirable kinds :
(1) When the steady activity of the mind is in the direction of selecting the pleasurable to the senses and avoiding the unpleasant to the senses.
The search of pleasurable sensations, and the avoidance of unpleasant sensations is not a desirable form of concentration. Nor is a concentration upon any physical pain; the constant thinking "I have a pain”.
