The minimum duration of Vedaniya Karma is 9 hours and 36 minutes and that of Nam and Gotra 6 hours and 24 minutes, the rest is less than 48 minutes.) These sutras define the maximum and the minimum duration of the main types of Karma. The maximum duration is inconceivably long. It cannot be expressed in any known measurement. Jainism therefore uses a measurement known as Sagaropam, which literally means comparable to the ocean. The maximum duration of knowledge-obscuring, perceptionobscuring, vedaniya and obstructing Karma is 3000 trillion Sagaropams. That of deluding Karma is 7000 trillion Sagaropams. That of physique and status determining Karma is 2000 trillion Sagaropams and that of age span is 33 Sagaropams. These maximum limits apply to the fully developed five-sensed living beings that stick to the wrong beliefs. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
