Mahavir attained Nirvan at Pavapuri in Bihar after delivering his last sermon (deshana). Jains celebrate it as Diwali, festival of lights. Since his Nirvan, Jalmandir with Mahavir's footprints at Pavapuri has achieved great sanctity as a place of pilgrimage.
