60 JAINS TODAY IN THE WORLD
8) The Gaṇividyā deals with astronomy and astrology. It mentions favourable dates and good omens for monastic life.
9) The Devendrastava is a glorification of the Jina by the King of Gods.
10) The Virastava praises Mahāvīra.
The Sthanakavāsī and Terapanthi do not acknowledge these ten Prakirṇakas as authentic.
The "Upanga", "Mūlasūtra", "Chedasūtra", "Culikāsūtra" and "Prakīrṇaka" together are called "Angabāhya" (other than the "Anga" or secondary canon).
In some instances, the Śvetambara list 84 sacred books that constitute their "Canon". To the above-mentioned, they add: 20 "Prakirṇaka" (various texts), 12 "Niryukti" (commentaries) plus 9 other works and they suppress the 2 "Culika-sūtra".
They also mention 36 “Nigama" (a kind of Jain "Upaniṣad").
2. The sacred books of the Digambara
As we have already said, the Digambara think that the Śvetambara's "Canon" is not authentic in its contents concerning the teachings of Mahāvīra and his predecessors. For that reason, they have defined their own "Siddhanta" comprising the “Major Agama" and the "Subordinate Agama"" or "Anuyoga".
· The "Major Agama" consists of two books:
1) The Satkhandāgama or “Āgama in six parts", written by two Dharasena's disciples: Acarya Puspadanta and Bhūtabali (Ist-IInd centuries). According to the Svetāmbara, Acārya Puspadanta and Bhutabali flourished in the IVth_yth centuries). The major Agama contains a theory of karma and modes of spiritual path.
