PUBLISHER'S NOTE
We are happy to put before the reader Professor T. G. Kalghatgi's 'STUDY OF JAINISM'.
Professor Kalghatgi's name is well-known in the field of Jain scholarship. He has devoted his life-time to the study of Jainism in its various aspects, philosophical, historical and textual. We hope that readers will find in this book a mature expression of his learning.
Professor Kalghatgi begins his study with a fairly detailed and extensive outline of the history of Jainism, speaking of Tirthankaras who preceded Mahavira, before coming to the last Tirthankara, Mahavira himself, to whose life and thought he devotes a considerable section of his book. The next part of the book is concerned with Jaina Philosophy and doctrine, a complex subject which Professor Kalghatgi is able to present with readable simplicity. He places Jaina history and thought in the context of the larger canvas of Indian life and thought in general, speaking of their interactions and debates and thus enriching our understanding of both the Jains and the larger life of which they were a significant part.
