5. The sāmāyika of a householder will be fruitless if he re
flects upon mundane matters while practising sāmāyika, as his concentration will become meaningless.

Fifty Six Scriptural Study
1. Among the twelve internal and external austerities which
are experienced by a wise person, there is none that equals or will be equal to the study of scriptures.

2. By constantly studying the scriptures one can be freed from all miseries.

3. The knowledge of all subjects is comprehended through the study of scriptures.

4. The knowledge-obscuring karmas are destroyed by the study of scriptures.

5. Just as a blind person cannot delight in the presence of
moonlight so also the knowledge of an ignorant person, who studies the scriptures over and over but is unable to experience the truth, is insignificant.
