Conquest of Passions
119
5. Greed increases on account of deceit and falsehood.
— Utta. Sū. 32.30
Eighteen Desire
1. The more you get, the more you want; desire increases
with every gain. What starts as two grams of gold, has a tendency to end as millions of grams ( as illustrated in the episode of Kapila Kevali ).
— Utta. Sū. 8.17
2. Just as a crane is produced from an egg and an egg from
a crane, so delusion springs from desire and desire from delusion.
— Utta. Sū. 32.6
3. If there were numberless mountains of gold and silver as
big as mount Kailāśa, they would not satisfy an avaricious man; for avarice is boundless like the sky.
- Utta. Sū. 9.48
4. Knowing that this entire earth with its crops of rice and
barley, with its gold and cattle, all put together, will not satisfy a greedy man, one should practise austerities.
— Utta. Sū. 9.49
