________________ Introduction their miseries. These efforts of ours would generate our auspicious karmas. This is the holy essence of the religion of man. One should practise it to one's full capacity. It is what we call dharma. And by following it, we do good to ourselves as well as to the society. The assertion of the celebrated Vyasa in the following couplet comprises universal truth. XXV na hidṛśam samvananam trişu lokeșu vidyate/ daya maitri ca bhuteṣu danam ca madhura ca väk// Meaning: Compassion and friendliness towards all living beings, charity and sweet words constitute the matchless charm or spell in the three worlds, which unfailingly wins over the hearts of all beings.
