Lord Mahāvira and National Character
161
In the guņavratas the field of activity has been restricted. Exploitation and violence have been restrained and gradually their minimisation is aimed at. In the śikṣā vratas stress has been laid on the performance of anuşthānas. They have been prescribed in order to purify heart. Considerable emphasis has been given on the values of controling desires, penance and renunciation. -
To sum up : The teachings of Lord Mahāvira have full relevance in present day life for all. There is no scope for narrowmindedness in them. They pave the way for universalism where there is no room for evils like hoarding, violence, exploitation and so on.
