In praise of the anthologist's patron
उययमदोसंतरियं फुरिय-पयावं पि सेवियं सुहयं । नमिमो विसमाइच्चस्स ठइय-तेयस्सि निउरं ॥ ३
विषमादित्यः पृथ्वीपतिरम्म स्तस्यादित्यादृव्यतिरेकाऽयम् । आदित्यस्याभ्युदयः स्थगिततेजस्विनिकुरम्बः सन् दोषान्तरितो रात्र्यन्तरि[1B] तः पुनर्न भवति स्थायी । तथा स्फुरितप्रतापः सन् सेवितः सन् सुखदा न भवति । विषमादित्यस्य हृदयं स्थगिततेजस्वि निकुरम्बं सन्तमनुत्साहादिभिदेर्निरनन्तरितमनभिभूतं तेषामसत्त्वादेव, तथा स्फुरितप्रतापमपि सेवितं सन्तमिह जगति सुखदमतापकारिणं 'नमिमा' नमाम: । तेजस्विन एकत्र शशधरादयोऽन्यत्र परचक्रपतयस्तेषां । निकुरम्बः समूहः स्थगिताऽन्तरितेो येन स तथेति श्लिष्टपदस्यार्थः ॥
We bow to the rise of Viṣamaditya (a novel sun so different from the familar sun-viz. King Amma), that is not dosaṁtariya (1. interfered by nights, 2. marred by faults), which though it has scintillating payāva ( 1. heat, 2. prowess) is a source of happiness to those who resort to it, and which has overwhelmed all the other te yassi (1. luminaries, 2. powerful rivals). (3)
The good and the wicked
सुयणो धुइ-निरवेक्खा विवरीय फलड़ खलयण-पसंसा | सज्जण- खल-निरवेक्खं जह-ट्ठियाणं गुणाण नमो ॥ ४
स्तुत्यनपेक्षोऽपि सुजनोऽनुगुणा भवति । खलजनप्रशंसा तु विपरीत फलति । प्रशस्यमानः सर्वोऽप्यनुगुणो भवति । खलः स्तुतावपि विगुण पवेत्यर्थः । तस्मात् कोsa नमस्थस्तदाह । सज्जनखल निरपेक्षं यथा भवत्येवं यथावस्थितेभ्या गुणेभ्यो नम इति ॥

The good is indifferent to praise. The praise of the wicked produces the contrary result. Hence we bow to the merits whereever they are, irrespective of the good or the wicked (4)
