________________ Notes 289 1207. The goddesses of enemies' wealth (af feet) were freely given over and distributed to the supplicants (qui), just outside (artefast), without bringing even a coin out of them inside His palace. This is done because He has no faith (aintHICOT), as it were, in women who, by nature, have the bad traits of faithlessness (fahH-AFECT-HETTGTT). 1208. At his consecration ceremony to celebrate his victory, the wives of enemy-kings (fagopaat) were assigned the new task (Ta-FUTSTĪST) of waving hairy chowries over him. They did the job, however, with tears in their eyes, which ( tears ) they sucked in, having concealed (stafet) them behind the chowries fluttered ( 5f0q3-37f97) by them at that moment. The Poet calls this Poem Gaüdavaho as Gāhāvidha (TETO) a Pedestal in Gāthās ’, serving as a base or foundation, as it were, for a magnificent edifice to be built up later.
