III. THE EIGHT VIRTUES THAT SHOULD BE ACCEPTED AND PRACTISED : 1) The fear of sins; 2) A sense of shame; 3) A pleasant and serene temperament; 4) Popularity; 5) Farsightedness; 6) Thinking of one's abilities and limitations; 7) Acquiring a special knowledge; 8) A partiality for virtues. IV. THE EIGHT ENDEAVOURS: 1) Gratitude; 2) Helping others; 3) Kindness; 4) Associating with noble people; 5) Listening to spiritual discourses; 6) The eight qualities of the intellect; 7) Conforming to well-known traditions and practices; 8) Adoring the virtuous. 1. THE ELEVEN DUTIES : 1) In the grihasta life one has to earn a living. This is absolutely essential. People should earn a living in accordance with law; or they should earn it legally. This is called the prosperity of lawfulness. In the other activities of life also one should act legally. 2) Our expenditure should be within our income. If it exceeds our income, it should not be by forgetting dharma. This is the second duty called spending within the limits of one's income.
