________________ Chapter III Subject: The Self is the 2 Author of its Actions. (a) The Disciple's Doubt The disciple is convinced of the truth of the second proposition namely that the Soul is eternal. He further doubts the truth of the third proposition namely that the Soul is the author of its actions. He argues enrif after a oneffit, onff JT cherf en of I अथवा सहज स्वभाव कां, कर्म जीवनो धर्म ॥७१॥ Kartta jiva na karmano, karma ja kartta karma, Athava sahaja svabhava ka, karma jivano dharma. 71 The third doubt as the pupil's plea, The soul himself does no bondage, Or bondage acts itself ugly, Affixed by nature, or as knowledge. 71 4 The soul does not appear to be the author of its actions. Either say that there is a chain of actions, the previous action causing the subsequent one, or that though the soul does no action, actions automatically happen. On the other hand, if it be said that the Soul is the sole author of its actions, to cause actions will be its constitutive nature and then we will have to conclude that since the soul by nature performs actions it can never be free or liberated from them.
